WHY NEGOTIATE?

Books and courses on negotiation focus exclusively on “how” to negotiate, but this has been done to death - there’s nothing more that need be written. The “why” is much more important because upping one’s negotiation game delivers tremendous abundance and profit to life, and yet most Americans are bad at negotiation. By arranging the right thinking, mindsets, and actions towards those outcomes, an individual can dramatically improve all of their personal and business relationships.

 Since I took my first 3-day negotiation course in 1988 (a Karrass seminar in Portland, Oregon) and through the numerous books and programs I’ve enjoyed since then, there has hardly been an original idea presented about the “how.” What I have learned from these books and courses has been both repetitive and rote – i.e., their approach is to have you learn their mechanical tactic and repeat it so it becomes second nature. For me, though, I need to be more fundamental (I need base principles) and 100% ethical (I can’t allow myself to use manipulative tactics, and I have never seen a book or course outlining negotiation ethics).
